Headlines from the Barron News-Shield June 11, 2025 edition, plus some extra, newsy recommendations from the editor.
Hello readers,
If anything could bump photos from a record-setting Barron County Dairy Breakfast off the News-Shield front page, it is an outstanding sports team. While laying out the front page Tuesday afternoon and evening, we saved a place for the Barron High School baseball team, whether the sectional final result would be a win or a loss. If you haven’t already heard, the photo below tells the story.
This week’s Sports section also includes some impressive results from the State Track Meet, especially from the Cameron girls’ sprint relays. Pictured below is the 4X100-meter team atop the podium in Division 3. Here’s the full story.

A quick update to one of our front page stories—Barron School District Superintendent Diane Tremblay informed us Wednesday morning that she is no longer a candidate for the superintendent job in Hayward. Tremblay stated:
“I will be continuing as Superintendent of our Barron Area School District and I couldn't be happier about that decision. Now let's rally the community around our Golden Bear Baseball Team in Appleton. Go BEARS!!!!”

A two-vehicle crash Sunday evening, June 8, on Hwy. P in Barron County left one driver with life-threatening injuries after his truck overturned and caught fire, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol. The crash occurred around 5:48 p.m. approximately a quarter mile north of 17th Avenue, near Almena. State Patrol’s initial investigation stated that a northbound pickup truck driven by 26-year-old Oscar Ledesma, of Cumberland, crossed the center line, sideswiped a southbound pickup pulling a dump trailer. The impact with the trailer caused Ledesma’s truck to roll onto its roof and ignite.
One suspect is in custody and a warrant is out for a second suspect in connection with the theft of a safe containing an estimated $30,000 worth of rare coins and firearms from the home of a Cumberland resident, according to a complaint filed Friday, June 6, 2025, in Barron County Circuit Court.
